The first off the Gabriels Paddocks vineyard has created a wine of power, depth and concentration. Dark plummy fruit on the nose is layered with chocolate and cherries with supple silky tannins.
— OR —
It was an interesting year with some highs and some lows on the weather front, but ultimately it comes down to the vineyard management practices, and what kind of material there is to work with in the winery. The seasons are definitely shifting on us in the Hunter, with mad rainfall one minute followed by dry, hot weather. Lucky we thrive on a challenge!
Another first for us with the production of a new Single Site Shiraz off the property at Cellar Door – Gabriels Shiraz. An old clone of Shiraz which differs significantly in its profile from the others in our portfolio, offering a bigger, richer style of wine. The soils at Cellar Door are a combination of clay and deep loams making it ideal for Shiraz; low yielding vines with medium sized canopies producing long elongated bunches with small concentrated berries. Crushed and cold soaked for 3 days, the fruit is left to ferment in opens and pumped over several times a day. Pressed off once dry and sent to barrel for maturation prior to bottle.
Now 18 months in bottle Gabriels Shiraz is drinking beautifully. Deep garnet red in colour with a nose of blackberries and moccha. This is a Shiraz with power and concentration and gorgeous depth of flavour. Juicy upfront with strawberries and raspberries melding into soft spices and silky tannins, and finishing with a delicious savoury edge. We hope you love it and appreciate its differences.
A perfect wine for winter nights and beef cheek ragu..
This wine should see some lovely ageing of 7+ years.
